The starting point of every G Hughs & Son outfit, is the underwear, which in the case of 17th Century menswear is the shirt. Made from white linen, shirts formed an essential part of a man's wardrobe, from plain and functional, to highly decorated, we are able to produce linen blend, and pure linen shirts to meet individual specifications, including historically accurate fastenings and decorative lace and stitching.
As demonstrated in the image to the right, seventeenth-century clothing was far from plain or un-embellished. Documentary evidence shows that braid and lace of varied qualities was widely available in the seventeenth century, and even the garments of relatively poor people may have been adorned with decoration.
Passementerie - Hand Made Buttons
G Hughs and Son commissions make extensive use of techniques such as passementerie (the art of hand winding buttons) to give historical authenticity and personal flair.
Living History Kit, Practical Reenactment
